A successful piano restoration is the result of a collaborative process; A pianist and a rebuilder together, as a team, define how the restored piano will look, sound and feel.
There is one caveat: the success of your piano restoration is dependent on the skills of the rebuilder, and on the musical relationship the rebuilder develops with you. As the pianist, you must choose your piano rebuilder well.
Here are some suggestions on how to choose a rebuilder who fits your musical needs.
Keep your musical goal in the front of your mind and let it direct your entire project. If you are having trouble defining your goal, try to write about it or discuss it in conversations with other musicians. You might be surprised at just how clearly you have already intuitively defined your musical goals.
Trust your gut musical instincts. Even if you think that you are not the finest pianist in the world, you know on a deep level what you are looking for, and what result would make you happy. If sales talk does not respect those gut instincts, or plays them down, or makes you feel as if your instincts are not equal to the technician’s expertise, consider another rebuilder. This is a long term association, and you need to feel in control of the process.
Participate in and guide your project. Rebuilding a piano is a very personal undertaking. Find a rebuilder who will allow you to help define and guide your piano project.
Find a rebuilder who inspires you with their passion for the piano.
Ask questions about the process; many questions. A fine rebuilder is thrilled by the teaching aspect of the work.
As you consider your piano restoration keep in mind that the most successful piano restoration will always be guided by an engaged and inquisitive client, who, though not skilled in the myriad skills required of the rebuilder, is in control of the artistic and visual outcome.
If you choose your rebuilder well, you will have purchased the services of a person who considers the building of your piano and the creation of beautiful tone to be much more than a job, but a calling and a way of life.
